Commissioner Paschal seconded the
motion, and upon a vote, the results were as follows:
Aye: Cox, Matthews, Paschal, Reives, Stafford, and
Wicker
Nay: None
The Chairman ruled the resolution had been adopted
unanimously.
Chairman Stafford recognized Ms. Jane S. Barringer,
President of the Railroad House Historical Association, who
presented a request for the Board to consider allocating funds
to conduct a survey of historical buildings for the National
Register of Historic Sites. The cost to conduct the survey
would be approximately $30,000.00. The Department of Archives
and History will provide $10,000.00 of the project funds and
the Railroad House Historical Association will provide
$5,000.00. Following her presentation, Ms. Doris McKracken, a
member of the Railroad House Historical Association, stated
that the Association's $5,000.00 contribution to this project
was a gift given to the Association from the Heirs of Ida
Murchison approximately ten years ago.
Ms. Mary Ellen Bowen, representing the Downtown
Revitalization Corporation, stated that the City and County
will need to share in-kind support for this project, such as
the use of city and County vehicles and providing office space
and office supplies for the individual conducting the
county-wide survey. Commissioner Cox asked if Broadway has
been asked to participate in the funding of the project. Ms.
Bowen stated that Broadway was not asked to contribute, but she
would approach their Board about participating. She stated
that the City of Sanford Board of Aldermen was approached about
this request. The Board was very receptive and indicated
that the request would have to be considered in the City's
upcoming fiscal year budget.
5
