2010
LEE COUNTY
© O FOCI (3 a al • 60 C
Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow
RESOLUTION BY THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
DECLARATION OF APRIL 1, 2010 AS LEE COUNTY CENSUS DAY
WHEREAS, the United States conducts a complete count of its residents every ten years through a
Census and the 2010 Census forms will be arriving by mail to all addresses in March; and
WHEREAS, having a complete count of every man, woman and child in Lee County is vital, because
millions of dollars are distributed to the county, its schools and its towns based on Census counts; and
WHEREAS, just one uncounted person could mean the loss of thousands of dollars over ten years; and
WHEREAS, participation in the Census is also vital because election districts for federal, state and
local offices are required by law to be redrawn based o the results of the 2010 Census; and
WHEREAS, those who are not counted in the 2010 Census will be under - represented in election
districts because they will not be included in election district maps; and
WHEREAS, businesses, nonprofits and many other groups also depend on accurate Census counts of
residents to make decisions about products, locations and services; and
• WHEREAS, residents can complete and return the forms without fear that the information they provide
will be used against them for any reason, because federal law provides a $250,000 fine and up to five
years in prison for any Census staff member violating confidentiality of information; and
WHEREAS, residents can protect the privacy of their residences and farms by returning the Census
questionnaires in postage -paid envelopes by April 1, 2010, which prevents a Census worker from
having to visit residences to collect household information; and
WHEREAS, the 2010 questionnaire is shorter than ever and only takes approximately ten minutes to
complete.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board of Commissioners declares April 1, 2010,
as Census Day in Lee County and urges all residents to immediately complete and return their forms,
because doing so enhances revenues and ensures electoral representation of all residents.
Adopted this 15 day of March 2010.
A EST:
Gaynel . Lee, Clerk
Richard B. Hayes, Chairman
Lee County Board of Commissioners
•
