2005 - <br />0 LEE COUNTY <br />Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, Mary A. McLeod McLean was born in Sanford on October 26, 1905 to Lydia <br />McLeod, was married to the late Henry McLean and has one son, Robert, and <br />WHEREAS, Mrs. McLean was raised by her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. George Mcleod, <br />attended Livingstone School where she completed the eighth grade, as the schools in Sanford did not go <br />beyond the seventh grade, and graduated from high school with honors from Columbia Heights School in <br />Winston Salem, and <br />WHEREAS, Mrs. McLean, at the age of seventeen, received her Elementary "B" Teaching <br />Certificate and began teaching at Pineview for approximately $60.00 per month, and later obtained her <br />Elementary "A" Certificate, the highest available from Winston Salem Teachers College and later taught <br />school in the counties of Lee, Chatham, Harnett, Johnston, and Duplin, and <br />WHEREAS, after returning to Winston Salem Teachers College and receiving her Bachelor of <br />Science Degree in Education and her Masters Degree in Elementary Education at North Carolina Central <br />University in Durham, she taught in various locations including West End and Pinehurst, but returned to <br />Lee County to teach at W. B. Wicker School, and in 1969 transferred to Floyd Knight School where she <br />remained until her retirement in 1971, and <br />WHEREAS, Ms. McLean is a devoted Christian and member of Fair Promise A.M.E. Zion <br />• Church, was a Sunday school teacher for 45 years, served as past president of various church related <br />associations, former pianist and organist of the church, founder of the Birthday Project at Fair Promise, <br />and currently serves as Deaconess, and <br />WHEREAS, Mrs. McLean continues to be involved in many church and community organizations <br />and has life memberships in the NAACP, NCAE and the NEA, and <br />WHEREAS, Mrs. Mary A. McLeod McLean will celebrate her 100 birthday on October 26` and <br />deserves this special recognition by the County of Lee for her many individual contributions to the <br />community and church. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Commissioners does hereby honor Mrs. McLean <br />on her 100 birthday, and wishes her many more happy productive years. <br />Adopted this 17` OafoTpctober 2005. <br />Chairman <br />Reives <br />E.
