LEE COUNTY
Committed Today for a Better Tornorrow
LEE COUNTY FINANCE COMMITTEE
ITEM ABSTRACT ITEM NO: I. C.
Meeting Date: January 22, 2008
Information
X Action Item
- Consent Agenda
SUBJECT: E-911 Landline Funds Resolution
DEPARTMENT: Administration
CONTACT PERSON: John Crumpton, County Manager
REQUEST: Recommend that the Board of Commissioners approve the E-911 Landline
Funds Resolution.
SUMMARY:
Collection and disbursement of all 911 fees in North Carolina changed on
January 1, 2008. These changes arise from Session Law 2007-383,
signed by Governor Easley on August 19, 2007. Under the new law, all
911 service fees will be collected at the rate of $.70 for each connection.
Wireline and wireless providers will collect the fees and remit to the North
Carolina 911 Board for administration. Prior to January 1, 2008, wireline
fees were collected by providers and remitted directly to the County and
wireless fees were remitted and administered by a Wireless 911 Board.
The Session Law allows that any fund balance of landline line fees
collected prior to January 1, 2008 can be transferred to the general fund of
the local governing entity. The attached resolution authorizes the transfer
of the funds to the General Fund and restricts the use to public safety or
emergency management projects.
ATTACHMENT(S):
Resolution Regarding the Use of Landline 911 Funds
Letter from Richard Taylor, Executive Director, NC Wireless 911 Board
Copy of Session Law 2007-383 House Bill 1755
BUDGET IMPACT:
N/A
PUBLIC HEARING:
None
PRIOR COMMITTEE
ACTION:
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommend adoption of the Resolution Regarding the Use of Landline
911 Funds to the Board of Commissioners
