11.8.4 CANOPY/AWNING SIGNS. <br />11.8.4.1 The maximum permitted sign area, <br />location, characteristics, and number of <br />Canopy/Awning Signs shall be determined in <br />accordance with Tables 11-1, 11-2, and 11-4 and <br />as outlined in this Section. The following <br />additional regulations shall apply to <br />canopy/awning signs: <br />11.8.4.1.1 Canopy signs may be attached to <br />the canopy at the face of or under the canopy. No <br />sign may be attached to the support structures. <br />11.8.4.1.2 Signs attached to the top of the <br />canopy are considered wall signs and must meet <br />the size requirements for,wall signs. <br />11.8.4.1.3 Signs which are suspended under a <br />canopy and/or cantilevered roof shall be at least <br />eight (8) feet above the sidewalk at their lowest <br />point. <br />11.8.4.1.4 No support structures shall be <br />visible. <br />11.8.4.1.5 To encourage uniqueness and <br />originality, the canopy sign or projecting sign <br />may be of an irregular shape. These signs must <br />comply with all regulations as stated in this <br />section. <br />11.8.4.2 VALANCE AND COPY <br />SIZE FOR CANOPY/AWNING <br />SIGNS. <br />The valance, or apron, for any canopy shall in <br />no case exceed twelve (12) inches in height. <br />Individual letters or symbols on these valances <br />shall not exceed nine (9) inches in height. This <br />provision shall apply only to valances to which <br />sign copy is affixed. <br />11.8.4.3 ILLUMINATION FOR <br />CANOPY/AWNING SIGNS. <br />Canopy/ awning signs that may be illuminated <br />shall have no bare bulbs present on or around the <br />sign face. <br />11.8.4.4 CLEARANCE <br />REQUIREMENTS FOR CANOPY/ <br />AWNING SIGNS AND SUSPENDED <br />SIGNS. <br />All canopy/awning signs attached to the <br />underside of a canopy/awning shall maintain the <br />minimum clearance above the ground level of <br />any sidewalk or vehicular access area as <br />specified in the most recent edition of the North <br />Carolina State Building Code. <br />11.8.4.5 CANOPY/AWNING AND <br />WALL MOUNTED SIGNS FOR <br />MULTIPLE BUSINESS <br />COMPLEXES. <br />All establishments within Multiple Business <br />Complexes shall use, exclusively, <br />canopy/awning or wall signs. No mixing of sign <br />types within a Multiple Business Complex shall <br />be permitted. Plain canopies and awnings <br />without any copy may be used in combination <br />with wall mounted signs. <br />11.8.4.6 ADDITIONAL CANOPY/ <br />AWNING SIGN PERMITTED ON <br />CORNER OR DOUBLE FRONTAGE <br />LOTS. <br />Lots with more than one street frontage shall be <br />allowed to erect one additional canopy/awning <br />sign on the secondary street frontage. The <br />secondary sign may not be placed on the same <br />wall as the primary sign. <br />11.8.4.7 ADDITIONAL CANOPY/ <br />AWNING SIGN PERMITTED TO <br />FACE SIDE OR REAR PARKING <br />LOT. <br />Lots with parking to the side or rear of a building <br />shall be allowed to erect one additional <br />canopy/awning sign facing the parking lot, <br />provided that at least 50 percent of the required <br />parking for the building is located to the side or <br />rear of the building and an entrance to the <br />building faces the parking lot. The secondary <br />sign may not be placed on the same wall as the <br />primary sign. <br />
