Memo
To: Bob Brown, Chairman, Lee County Commissioners
From: Bob Heuts
Date: September 19, 2007
Re: Traffic Light at Intersection of Wyeth Driveway and 15/501
Please consider sending a letter to Tim Johnson, Division 8 Engineer, NC
Department of Transportation, requesting a traffic light for the intersection of Wyeth
Drive and 15/501 north of Sanford.
When Wyeth created a new entrance for their facility to 15/501 in 2003, the company
requested permission from NC DOT to construct a traffic light. A study was done by
NC DOT and subsequently the request was denied. Since 2003, the company has
added over a thousand jobs and now there are significant problems both in the
morning and the evening. Wyeth can affect the morning situation by moving the
guard house and creating an additional deceleration lane. In the morning, long lines
develop, backing traffic onto 15/501. In the evening with all of the ongoing traffic on
15/501 traveling at 55+ miles per hour, employees cannot turn south toward Sanford.
Elevation changes, speed and the width of the intersection creates an extremely
dangerous situation.
The letter requesting permission for Wyeth to install a traffic light should be sent to
Tim Johnson, Division 8 Engineer, PO Box 1067, Aberdeen, NC 28315 and copied
to G.R. Kindley, PO Box 280, Rockingham, NC 28380, J. Kevin Lacy, Chief Traffic
Engineer, 1501 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1501, Rob Stone and
Chuck Dumas, PO Box 1067, Aberdeen, NC 28315.
Wyeth continues to construct additional facilities and add employees (in excess of
1,500 in 2007). The company has room to grow on their site in Lee County. Wyeth
site planners have met numerous times with DOT recently. Apparently, they have
been unable to convince DOT that a light is warranted. Thus far, only minor
accidents have occurred but it is only a matter of time before something much more
serious will occur.
® Thank you for your assistance.
226 CARTHAGE STREET
PO BOX 1968 SEP Z g
SANFORD NC 27331-1963
9191774-8439 FAX 9191775-5410
e-mail: info(alcedc.com web page: www.lcedc.com
