RALPH B. HUNTER. MAYOR
-',l~l:; 14. a~.rr 1J~
` 4je Zown o NroabtuaV
BROADWAY. NORTH CAROLINA 27505
October 23, 1991
Board of Commissioners
P 0 Box 1968
Sanford, NC 27330
Gentlemen and Mrs. Matthews:
IMOGENE GARRET-j. CLERK
In 1984 the county offered to collect the town of Broadway taxes for a
fee sufficient to cover the counties cost. The amount agreed to for 1984
was $2,460.00. The amount would increase at whaEever percentage the towns
levy increases from year to year. The town paid the county $923.00 initally
to cover the start up cost.
Everything worked fine until this year (Mr. Crissman is an excellent tax
collector). Earlier this year the commissioners sought to increase the
counties fees. We responded and the matter was dropped, for good we
thought. About two weeks ago, we were contacted again and it seems that
the commissioners are determined to increase our cost.
After some investigation, we have discovered that we have been overcharged
from the beginning. Listed below is the charges for collecting taxes
for the various tax districts in the county.
Tax District
No. of Accounts
Amt Charges
Amt Per Account
Tramway
4728
$1,593.00
.34
Lemon Springs
3082
1,485.00
.48
Carolina Trace
3392
1,893.00
.56
N. As you can see, if each of the fire districts
had exactly the same number of accounts as Broadway (426) you would only
charge $2,266.32 for collecting 3408 accounts. Where is the fairness?
