BOOK ~r,„~ <br />~~9~ <br />The Commissioners also appointed an advisory committee on plans <br />for the courthouse. <br />At a meeting on April 8, 1908, the Commissioners again met and <br />plans and specifications were presented to them by Mr. H.L. Lewman. <br />Mr. Lewmar.'s plans were approved and accepted and his fee was to be <br />$300 for the plans unless he or Fall City Construction Company should <br />be the successful bidder for the construction of the building, and in <br />that event the plans would be free. The plans were placed in the <br />office of the Register of Deeds and an advertisement was authorized <br />to solicit bidders to construct the building. <br />On May 4, 1908, petitions from a number of citizens were <br />presented to the Board asking the Board to defer the building of the <br />courthouse and jail. A motion was made to postpone the building of <br />the courthouse until the first of next April. Upon a vote, three <br />were against the motion and two were in favor of the motion. _T-ke /i <br />motion was then made to postpone the building of the courthouse <br />indefinitely. The vote on this motion was one aye and four nay. A <br />motion was then made to build the courthouse at once. The vote on <br />this motion was four in favor and one against. A motion was made and <br />adopted that the plans and specifications now filed with the <br />committee be accepted and an advertisement made. <br />On May 6th, the Board met with all Commissioners present and the <br />first action was to adopt a resolution in which the Board expressed <br />regret that there was any dissension among the people in regard to <br />the act of the Board to build a courthouse and jail, and assuring the <br />people that their actions had been taken in good faith and in keeping <br />with what they felt was in the best interest of the County and <br />soliciting the cooperation of all good citizens in their arduous <br />work, and requesting that a copy of the resolution be spread upon the <br />minutes and a copy be sent to the Sanford Express for publication. <br />This resolution was adopted by a vote of four in favor and one <br />against. <br />On May 25th, the Board met and received bids for the erection of <br />the courthouse and jail, and the following bids were received: <br />Pearce S Frances - $39,500; Rommel Brothers - $42,300; The Alfred <br />Struck Company - $41,000; Fall City Construction - $36,897. After <br />receiving the bids the Board deferred consideration of them until the <br />next meeting. The Board next met on June 1, 1908, and the first <br />action taken was to reject all bids received for the construction of <br />the courthouse and jail. The Board then resolved to proceed with the <br />selection of an architect and that the courthouse and jail be built <br />according to the plans to be furnished by him and approved by the <br />Board, and further ordered that all action heretofore taken in <br />regards to the selection of an architect or the adoption of plans in <br />connection with the building of the courthouse and jail be rescinded. <br />The Board then selected Charles McMillan to be the architect for the <br />building of the courthouse and jail. The Board then appointed <br />Messrs. J.J. Edwards, J.L. Godfrey, and A.A.F. Seawell to be on a <br />Building Committee with full authority to act in the premises subject <br />
