Wicker Civic Center. Trustee Chairman Ed Garrison
discussed with the Board the establishment of a committee to review the past history of the Civic
Center and to- create a plan for its future. Mr. Garrison stated the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center is
celebrating ts anniversary this year and has successfully hosted large and small events that
have included local\state and even international groups; however, the funding systems that were put in
place to• support the Gvlc Center are showing substantial strain. College and county groups, which are
not charged for using the facility, make up over fifty - percent of the usage. Much of the equipment and
original mechanical systems are showing their age and some no longer have replacement parts
available. It felt that planning for the future of the Civic Center is necessary and timely. The CCCC
Board of Trustee's requesting the Commissioners appoint a sitting commission member and the
County Manager to the new planning committee, along with two members from the CCCC Board of
Trustees, Dr. Bud Marchant, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, and David Foster from the Community College who
will serve as staff for the committee. The seven member appointees will determine which business and
community leaders need to be included on the committee and determine a timeline for committee
activities. A full report, with suggestions and recommendations, will be presented to both the CCCC
Board of Trustees and the Lee County Board of Commissioners. After discussion, Chairman Shook
asked Board members to contact her if they were interested in serving on said Board and a decision
will be made at the June 20 meeting. No action was taken.
2
