flCD% i:~Ftr= 1 <br />RESOLUTION OPPOSING AN INCREASE <br />IN THE TAX UPON THE SALE OF CIGARETTES <br />WHEREAS, the news media has recently contained extensive <br />publicity of a proposed two dollar per pack federal tax to be imposed <br />upon the sale of cigarettes; and <br />WHEREAS, the production and marketing of tobacco and the <br />manufacture of tobacco products is vital to the economic well-being <br />of Lee County and the people of eastern North Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, a large increase in the tax upon tobacco products <br />would be a damaging blow to the entire economy of easter North <br />Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of <br />Lee County that it is unfair to single out tobacco for the imposition <br />of increased taxes, and that the proposed increase in tobacco taxes <br />by the United States Government is excessive, unjust and <br />unreasonable; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF <br />COMMISSIONERS OF LEE COUNTY: <br />(1) That the Board of Commissioners of Lee County does hereby <br />go on record in opposition to the proposed increase in taxes upon the <br />sale of cigarettes by the United States Government. <br />(2) That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the President of <br />the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the <br />Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and the members <br />of the United States Senate and House of Representatives in Congress <br />from North Carolina. <br />This Resolution adopted this 3rd day of May, 1993. <br />•V <br />10, <br />15 <br />Beal, <br />Board of Commissioners of Lee County <br />
