NOOK 15 PFS~ 50 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />TO DESIGNATE THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER AS "NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH" IN <br />LEE COUNTY. <br />WHEREAS, diabetes is a problem of grave concern and consequence <br />in American society with serious complications and effects which can <br />be lessened through tight blood glucose monitoring and education as <br />recently proven through the Diabetes Control and Complications Trials <br />(DCCT); <br />WHEREAS, more than 13 million people in America, including many <br />people not yet diagnosed, are affected by diabetes; <br />WHEREAS, 500,000 new cases are diagnosed yearly; <br />WHEREAS, diabetes is a leading cause of death and a major cause <br />of disability in Lee County; <br />WHEREAS, more than 50,000 lower extremity amputations were <br />performed on people with diabetes annually, a rate 15 times higher <br />that of the non-diabetic population; <br />WHEREAS, death from kidney disease is 500 times more common <br />among young adults with insulin-dependent diabetes than in the <br />general population; <br />WHEREAS, diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness in <br />adults; <br />WHEREAS, half of all people with diabetes have a history of <br />hypertension compared to 20 percent of the general population; <br />WHEREAS, people with diabetes are twice as likely as members of <br />the general population to have heart disease and are more likely to <br />die from it; <br />WHEREAS, people with diabetes are twice as likely as members of <br />the general population to have heart disease and are more likely to <br />die from it; <br />WHEREAS, detectable loss of nerve function occurs in <br />approximately 40 percent of persons with diabetes, and after 25 years <br />of the disease, more than 90 percent are affected; <br />WHEREAS, pregnant women with diabetes require intensive <br />prenatal care and their babies are five times more likely to require <br />intensive care during and immediately following birth than other <br />babies; <br />58 <br />WHEREAS, people with diabetes are more than twice as likely to <br />require hospitalization during the year; <br />
