Specimens of blood or other potentially infectious <br />materials shall be placed in a container which <br />prevents leakage during collection, handling, <br />processing, storage, transport, or shipping. <br />f. Eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics or lip <br />balm, and handling contact lenses are prohibited in <br />work areas where there is a reasonable likelihood of <br />occupational exposure. Food and drink shall not be <br />kept in refrigerator, freezers, shelves, cabinets or <br />on countertops or benchtops where blood or other <br />potentially infectious materials are present. <br />3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) <br />The following personal protective clothing and <br />equipment shall be provided and worn as designated by <br />exposure determination. <br />a. Disposable latex gloves: shall be worn for barrier <br />protection against contact with blood or other <br />potentially infectious material. Damaged gloves <br />shall be replaced immediately. Other soiled <br />clothing or equipment shall be removed before the <br />removal of gloves. Gloves shall be carefully <br />removed to avoid skin contact with the exterior <br />of the gloves. <br />b. Non-disposable rubber or leather/utility work <br />gloves: shall be worn for protection if warranted. <br />Non-disposable gloves shall be cleaned and carefully <br />inspected for punctures, tears of other damage after <br />each use. Damaged gloves shall be replaced <br />immediately. <br />c. Mask, Eye Protection and Disposable Face Shields: <br />shall be worn for barrier protection whenever <br />splashes, sprays, spatters, or droplets of blood or <br />potentially infectious materials may enter the eyes, <br />mouth, nose and face. <br />d. Protective Body Clothing: A washable or disposable <br />gown shall be worn for barrier protection against <br />skin contact with chemicals, blood or other <br />potentially infectious material. Soiled gowns shall <br />be replaced immediately (type and characteristic of <br />protective body clothing is designated by exposure <br />determination. <br />6 <br />
