Handwashing Procedures <br />(1) Handwashing shall not be done in a food <br />preparation area. <br />(2) Stand away from the sink to reduce contamination <br />of clothing. <br />(3) Use warm, running water and antiseptic soap. <br />(4) Work up a lather and rub briskly for at least 15 <br />seconds. <br />(5) Rinse with flowing water, with water running <br />from wrist to finger tips. <br />(6) Dry hands with paper towel and turn off water <br />faucet with towel. Dispose of towel in <br />appropriate receptacle. <br />(7) Where handwashing facilities are not available, <br />a waterless (alcohol based) hand cleaner is <br />provided and shall be used, in accordance with <br />product instructions. Personnel will wash hands <br />with soap and water at earliest possible <br />opportunity. <br />(8) Hand washing is required immediately or as soon <br />as feasible after removal of personal protective <br />equipment. <br />b. Contaminated Needles and Sharps Containers <br />(1) Contaminated needles and other contaminated <br />sharps shall not be bent, recapped or removed <br />unless an alternative is unfeasible or such <br />action is required by a specific medical <br />procedure. Such recapping or needle removing <br />must be accomplished through the use of a <br />mechanical device or a one handed technique. <br />Immediately or as soon as possible after use, <br />contaminated sharps shall be placed in <br />appropriate containers until properly <br />processed. <br />(2) Sharps containers must be: <br />(i) Closable <br />(ii) Puncture resistant <br />(iii) Leak proof <br />(iv) Labeled biohazard or color coded red/orange <br />(v) Maintained upright <br />(vi) Replace routinely/not overfilled <br />c. All procedures involving blood or other potentially <br />infectious materials shall be performed in such a <br />manner as to minimize splashing, spraying, <br />spattering, and generation of droplets of these <br />substances. <br />5 <br />
