nl)6 1 5 T r= 491 <br />COUNTY OF LEE <br />BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN <br />It is the policy of the County of Lee to maintain a safe <br />working environment for its employees. Since the safe <br />performance of daily operations has become more threatened by <br />life-endangering communicable diseases such as Human <br />Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), the <br />County intends to comply with the Occupational Safety and <br />Health Administration's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (OSHA <br />29 CFR Part 1910.1030 Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne <br />Pathogens). The County of Lee will provide all affected employees <br />with the necessary training, immunizations and personal <br />protective equipment needed for protection from communicable <br />diseases. <br />I. PURPOSE <br />The purpose of this policy is to eliminate or minimize <br />occupational exposure to blood and other potentially <br />infectious materials. <br />II. SCOPE <br />This plan covers all County of Lee employees who could <br />have "reasonably anticipated" occupational exposure to <br />blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM's) <br />while performing job duties. <br />III.DEFINITIONS OF WORDS/PHRASES CONTAINED IN THE <br />"BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS STANDARD" <br />Blood - Human blood, human blood components and products made <br />from human blood. <br />Bloodborne Pathogens - Pathogenic microorganisms that are <br />present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. <br />These pathogens include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis B <br />Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). <br />Contaminated - The presence or the reasonably anticipated <br />presence of blood or other potentially infectious materials <br />on an item or a surface. <br />Contaminated Laundry - Laundry which has been soiled with <br />blood or other potentially infectious materials or may <br />contain sharps. <br />43 <br />Contaminated Sharps - Any contaminated object that can <br />penetrate the skin, including but not limited to needles, <br />scalpels, broken glass, etc. <br />
