Yesterday at church, I had six people to come to me
and their question was with all that the Chairman has to do, do they
need to reside their business connections in Lee County. I just want
to ask Mrs. Matthews if she is elected, does she feel that she could
perform the duties of the Chairperson being in Raleigh each day
working."
Commissioner Matthews stated, "Jack if I had not felt I could
not do it I would have told the people who have supported me in this
endeavor, and yes indeed I do, the people where I work are very much
aware I am a County Commissioner and what is going on, I have no
problem with it. I feel that I have the support and am very
definitely willing to accept it and will be responsible to that
office".
Commissioner Wicker stated, "you also have a Vice Chairman Mr.
Dossenbach that can answer most questions that I think would come
up".
Commissioner Dossenbach stated, "I just wanted it for the record
that we are covered - there are a lot of things that come up, such as
the CP&L emergency drills - I just want to be sure that we are
covered".
Commissioner Garner stated, "Mr. Chairman, for the record I
would like to respond to Commissioner Dossenbachs' comments - I think
they were inappropriate, it has never been done with this Board
before and I think it was inappropriate to make those comments prior
to the election of a chairman. I think Commissioner Matthews
responded very appropriately that if she did not think she could
handle it, assuming she is elected, she would not have allowed her
name to go forward. I therefore call for the vote on a written
ballot".
County Attorney K. R. Hoyle distributed paper ballots, and after
they were marked and signed, when counted the results were as
follows:
VOTED FOR
Dossenbach
Stafford
Garner
Matthews
Matthews
Matthews
Paschal
Stafford
Reives
Matthews
Stafford
Stafford
002
2
