a~bK :15 r~c: 5~2
Aye: Garner, Matthews, Paschal, Reives, Stafford and Wicker
Nay: None
The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously.
The Board considered a Resolution declaring February 20-26,
1994, as "Severe Weather Awareness Week" in Lee County. Governor
James Hunt has declared February 20-26, 1994, as "Severe Weather
Awareness Week in North Carolina". Commissioner Paschal moved to
adopt the following Resolution:
SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEER
1994
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, North Carolina's history is filled with events of
severe and damaging weather - from floods and tornadoes to blizzards
and hurricanes. Technology is rapidly improving to help predict the
location and ferocity of such storms, but North Carolinians should
not be lulled by the modernization of weather forecasting. An
educated person is still the best protector of individual lives and
property.
WHEREAS, in an effort to help our citizens learn more about
severe weather, the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and
Public Safety's Division of Emergency Management, the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction and the National Weather Service
sponsor Severe Weather Awareness Week each year. Through media
coverage, and the annual statewide tornado drill, this week long
observance reminds citizens that severe weather season is once again
upon us.
WHEREAS, during the fourth week of February, citizens should
visit their local library, watch their local television newscast, or
contact their county emergency management agency to learn more about
severe weather. Citizens can plan and practice what to do in the
event a tornado threatens their community by participating in the
statewide tornado drill during the morning of February 23, 1994.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, do hereby
proclaim the week of February 20 through 26, 1994, as "Severe Weather
Awareness Week" in Lee County, and urge all citizens to participate
in its observance by availing themselves of information that will
contribute to the preservation of life and property.
044
4
