He
presented her with a check from Governor Jim Hunt and Lieutenant
Governor Dennis Wicker for $6,915.00 for the Smart Start Program.
She introduced Mr. Jim Foster as the new Chairman of the coalition
and thanked Mr. Reives for the contribution.
Chairperson Matthews welcomed Central Carolina Community College
students to the meeting for County Government Week and asked each to
stand and give their name. They were invited to a luncheon
immediately following the meeting in the Gordon A. Wicker Community
Conference Room with Commissioners and department heads.
The Board considered a proposed Ordinance to regulate display of
firearms on public property. County Attorney K. R. Hoyle read the
Ordinance. Mr. Kim Allen and Donnie Pardue spoke in opposition to
the Ordinance. After much discussion Commissioner Reives moved to
adopt the Ordinance To Regulate Display Of Firearms in Public
Buildings Owned, Leased Or Under Control Of Lee County. Upon a vote,
the results were as follows:
Aye: Garner and Reives
Nay: Dossenbach, Matthews, Paschal, Stafford and Wicker
The Chairperson ruled the motion had been defeated by a five to
two vote.
The Board heard a report from County Attorney K. R. Hoyle
regarding terms of office for Central Carolina Community College
Board of Trustees. No action was taken on the matter.
The Board heard a request from Mrs. Beth Foushee representing
the Food Pantry. At the last meeting the Board voted to ask the Food
Pantry to vacate the space on the first floor of the Social Services
Department on or before October 1, 1994. Mrs. Beth Foushee,
Chairperson of the Food Pantry, and Mr. Tom Griffin, Treasurer of the
organization met with County Manager William Cowan and Commissioner
Jack Dossenbach on April 14th about this situation. Mrs. Foushee
told the Board they had assisted ninety-six (96) families during the
past month with food assistance and twenty (20) families with
financial assistance such as power and water bills. She told the
Board the Food Pantry had not been able to find a location to
relocate to due to the fact they had no money for rent, utilities,
etc. She asked that the Board consider assisting the Food Pantry
financially in the future if the need arose. Commissioner Dossenbach
0111
2
