697 0 0 7 <br />WHEREAS, Hurricane Emily <br />Hyde counties last year, our <br />destruction these storms can <br />devastated 29 counties. <br />caused significant damage in Dare and <br />state has not suffered the widespread <br />cause since 1989, when Hurricane Hugo <br />WHEREAS, as we prepare for hurricane season this year, we should <br />also remember the fury of Hurricane Hazel forty years ago. On <br />October 15, 1954, Hazel came ashore in Brunswick County and traveled <br />inland to Raleigh. Nineteen people died, more than 200 were injured <br />and damages were estimated at more than $100 million in 1954 dollars <br />in North Carolina alone. <br />WHEREAS, while we cannot prevent these storms, we can track them <br />and be prepared for them. Most importantly, we can follow the advice <br />of local and state emergency management officials when hurricanes <br />threaten. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I James B. Hunt, Jr., Governor of the State of <br />North Carolina, do hereby proclaim July 3-9, 1994, as "HURRICANE <br />PREPAREDNESS WEEK" in North Carolina, and encourage all citizens to <br />participate in the observance by reviewing hurricane safety <br />information to protect their property and save lives. <br />Upon a vote, the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Dossenbach, Garner, Paschal, Reives and Stafford <br />Nay: None <br />The Vice Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />Commissioner Stafford moved to recess for dinner and reconvene <br />at 7:00 P.M. for the scheduled public hearings. Upon a vote, the <br />results were as follows: <br />Aye: Dossenbach, Garner, Paschal, Reives and Stafford <br />Nay: None <br />The Vice Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously <br />and the meeting recessed in keeping with the motion. <br />The meeting reconvened at 7:00 P.M. in the Commissioners Room of <br />the Lee County Government Center, 106 Hillcrest, Sanford, North <br />Carolina, with all members present except commissioners Matthews and <br />Wicker. <br />The Board considered an application for permit for Cencom <br />Partners/Crown Cable to display fire works for the Fourth of July <br />celebration at Riverbirch Shopping Center. County Attorney K. R. <br />Hoyle explained the application to the Board and answered questions. <br />Commissioner Dossenbach moved to approve the application for permit <br />7 <br />
