soup 15 6~ <br />The Board considered a request from Mrs. Sissy Cohen, President <br />of the San Lee Humane Society for additional funds for this fiscal <br />year. After much discussion Vice Chairman Garner referred the matter <br />to the Finance Committee for consideration. No action was taken on <br />the matter. <br />The Board considered financial information requested from the <br />Board of Education. Mrs. Ruth Gurtis, Chairperson of the Lee County <br />Board of Education was present and answered questions of the Board in <br />relation to a letter recently sent to her from the Chairperson of the <br />Board of Commissioners. Much discussion followed and no action was <br />taken on the matter. <br />The Board considered a donation of $500.00 from Coty, Inc. to <br />Lee County Emergency Services to purchase first-aid supplies. <br />Commissioner Stafford moved to accept the donation of $500.00 from <br />Coty, Inc. to the Emergency Services Department. Upon a vote, the <br />results were as follows: <br />Aye: Dossenbach, Garner, Paschal, Reives and Stafford <br />Nay: None <br />The Vice Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />The Board considered a Proclamation declaring the week of July <br />3-9, 1994, as Hurricane Preparedness Week in Lee County. <br />Commissioner Stafford moved to approve the following Proclamation: <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK <br />1994 <br />BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA <br />WHEREAS, our beautiful Outer Banks and south side communities <br />provide our citizens wonderful places in which to vacation and live, <br />but we must be mindful that the beauty of mother nature can turn <br />deadly during hurricane season. No other atmospheric disturbance <br />combines duration, size and violence more destructively than a <br />hurricane. <br />WHEREAS, North Carolina is second only to Florida in <br />vulnerability to hurricanes. However, our emergency preparedness <br />programs are among the finest in the nation. But we cannot afford to <br />rely on prior accomplishments. We must constantly remind our <br />citizens and visitors of hurricane evacuation routes, locations of <br />emergency shelters and other protective measures. <br />6 <br />
