fob 15 QrsG "76
reasonable and provides a wise investment of the federal, state and
local tax dollars.
COMMISSIONER WICKER - In other words, you're really looking at
it for protection.
FRED HOBBS - Yes sir. We do need it for protection to operate
the approaches even they will never be perhaps pavement. The
approach, departure and arrival approach of the aircraft has got to
be protected as to height and as to disturbance with other
activities. We would like to own these approaches and fee simple so
that we can control them.
COMMISSIONER WICKER - How much land does the Raleigh Airport
have?
FRED HOBBS - I don't know how much land they have, I'd guess in
the thousands of acres. They have a lot of things that really drive
their acreage up.
COMMISSIONER MATTHEWS - In the event that American Airlines
should leave their hub would that make our status change?
FRED HOBBS - I don't think so. You have been designated as a
reliever airport to Raleigh Durham Airport.
® COMMISSIONER GARNER - We have been?
FRED HOBBS - You have been designated as a reliever to Raleigh-
Durham Airport. While the American Airlines hub certainly has a
major part to play in its air carrier status, the concept of general
aviation relievers is to get the corporate and pleasure travel out of
the air carrier and freight travel business. Freight is becoming a
an even more important part of Raleigh-Durham mission. I think you
will continue to see that grow regardless of what American does. A
mix of pleasure and corporate travel with that air carrier fleet is
just an unsafe mix of aircraft. That is what has led the national
program to the reliever system.
COMMISSIONER MATTHEWS - What improvements, modifications or
charges in hangar rent and other income producing items have been
recently made or planned? In your response to our May 18th letter
you put none for the hangar - we are getting rent for the hangars
presently aren't we?
JERRY LAWRENCE - We're charging for the hangars but we don't
plan on doing anything with the rate we're charging. The fuel is a
different issue. We want to "up" our sales and normally in a market
place like we're getting ready to be in, we would probably want to
reduce the price so that we can increase the sales.
0
005
5
