004 <br />oaR 15 IvE 852 <br />Aye: Garner, Matthews, Paschal, Reives, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />The Board heard a report from Lee County extension homemaker <br />Carol Cox on the history of extension homemakers and presented Board <br />members with a book on Lee County folklore. <br />The Board considered a proclamation designating the month of <br />November as "National Diabetes Month" in Lee County. Commissioner <br />Garner moved to approve the following proclamation: <br />WHEREAS, nearly 14 million Americans, 400,000 North Carolinians, <br />and between 1,285 and 1,910 residents of Lee County have diabetes, an <br />incurable disease that impairs the body's ability to convert sugar <br />into energy; and <br />WHEREAS, diabetes is the fourth-leading cause of death by <br />disease in the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, in this year alone, more than 650,000 Americans will <br />contract the disease and 160,000 will die from it, including a <br />disproportionate number of Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and <br />Native Americans; and <br />WHEREAS, people with diabetes have a high risk of developing <br />serious complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, heart <br />attack and stroke; and <br />WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness of diabetes, new <br />research findings, and the American Diabetes Association, may <br />stimulate public action in increasing research toward a cure, and <br />inspire people to take better control of their disease and live a <br />healthier life; <br />LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the Lee County Board of <br />commissioners hereby proclaim the month of November, 1994, to be <br />National Diabetes Month in Lee County and that the Chairperson of the <br />County Commission is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation <br />asking that every citizen participate in efforts that support <br />research to end diabetes and improve the lives of all those who have <br />this disease. <br />Upon a vote, the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Garner, Matthews, Paschal, Reives, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />4 <br />
