School Superintendent Steve Wrenn presented the
following Lee County Schools Facilities Proposal to the Board for
consideration:
"The Lee County Board of Education has developed a
long-range facilities plan with an estimated cost of $25 million to
meet the school system's current building needs. This is the first
of a two-phase strategy that would allow Lee County to begin a
proactive schedule for building and maintaining quality school
facilities in this community.
Elements of the first phase are one new elementary school
in the southwest area of the county; a replacement for Warren
Williams/St. Clair; a replacement of Deep River Elementary School; a
renovation/addition at Broadway Elementary School; and a renovation
at Lee County Senior High School. We believe now is the time to
establish a funding source for all elements of the plan because of
the severe needs at each of the mentioned sites, and the needs will
only worsen and multiply as student membership increases and
buildings continue to deteriorate".
After much discussion Commissioner Reives moved that the Board
acknowledges receipt of the request from the Lee County Board of
Education and it authorizes the County Manager to initiate the
procedures to seek approval of a referendum on school bonds in the
amount of $25 million. Commissioner Matthews seconded the motion,
and upon a vote, the results were as follows:
Aye: Dossenbach, Garner, Matthews and Reives
Nay: Cox
Commissioner Cox stated he voted no because he wanted the Deep
River and Broadway schools completed first.
The Board considered bid awards for office supplies.
