0009 <br />book 16 Da,u 629 <br />received approximately 400 of the 1,350 required sign-ups to have the 85% needed for <br />this project. He has contacted the Cooperative Extension Office and media in reference to <br />door-to-door contacts to assist with getting more sign-ups before the November 1, 1996 <br />deadline. <br />County Manager William Cowan gave the Board an update on the recent amended <br />Lee County Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance and Watershed Protection <br />Ordinance. These items will be placed on the next work session agenda for October 14, <br />1996. <br />The Board considered a resolution commending the volunteer fire departments and <br />local law enforcement agencies for their work during and after Hurricane Fran. <br />Commissioner Cox moved to approve the following resolution: <br />WHEREAS, Hurricane Fran hit Lee County on Thursday, September 5, 1996; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County was hit hard from the storm with high winds, downed <br />trees, power lines and left heavy debris on the roadways and left more than 40,000 people <br />without power; and <br />WHEREAS, emergency shelters were opened, utility companies lined up <br />personnel and equipment from out-of-town and out-of-state and hundreds of crews across <br />the southeast were on call and waiting; and <br />WHEREAS, members of the local Cameron, Cape Fear, Carolina Trace, Deep <br />River, Lemon Springs, Northview, Northwest Pocket, Tramway and West Sanford <br />Volunteer Fire Departments contributed their volunteer time to help clean debris from <br />roads and trees from private property, and assessed damage for the Emergency Services <br />Office. Local law enforcement offices are also commended for their extra work during <br />this time. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Commissioners would like to <br />commend members of the local Volunteer Fire Departments and local law enforcement <br />personnel for their extra work, long hours and personal sacrifices they endured after the <br />storm and during the cleanup process. <br />Commissioner Matthews seconded the motion, and upon a vote, the results were as <br />follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Garner, Groce, Matthews, Moretz and Reives <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />9 <br />
