0003 <br />adtl>< 16 PcE 623 <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been defeated by a four to three vote. <br />The Board considered a resolution honoring Carolina Power & Light Company, <br />Central Electric Membership Corporation, Alltel and the Department of Transportation. <br />Commissioner Reives moved to approve the following resolution, which Chairman Garner <br />read aloud and Clerk to the Board Gaynell Beal presented to representatives of the above <br />agencies: <br />WHEREAS, Hurricane Fran hit Lee County on Thursday evening, September 5, <br />1996; and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County was hit hard from the storm with high winds, downed <br />trees, power lines and telephone lines, and left heavy debris on the roadways and left more <br />than 40,000 people without power; and <br />WHEREAS, emergency shelters were opened, utility companies lined up <br />personnel and equipment from out-of-town and out-of-state and hundreds of crews from <br />across the southeast were on call and waiting; and <br />WHEREAS, employees of Carolina Power & Light Company, Central Electric <br />Membership Corporation, Alltel and the North Carolina Department of Transportation <br />worked endless hours to clean debris from state roads, restore power and telephone <br />service to residents of Sanford and Lee County; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Commissioners would like to <br />honor the staff of Carolina Power & Light Company, Central Electric Membership <br />Corporation, Alltel and the North Carolina Department of Transportation for the extra <br />work, long hours and personal sacrifices they endured after the storm and during the <br />cleanup process. <br />Commissioner Matthews seconded the motion, and upon a vote, the results were as <br />follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Garner, Croce, Matthews, Moretz and Reives <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />The Board considered a resolution in support of passage of the State Highway and <br />School Construction Bonds.
