TiiCOl•,AS
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 149T T Y,

The special meeting of the Board of Commissioners for the County of Lee, State
of North Carolina, and members of the Lee County Board of Education, convened at 7:00
p.m. in the Gordon A. Wicker Community Conference Room at the Lee County
Government Center, 106 Hillcrest Drive, Sanford, North Carolina. Commissioners
present were Jimmie M. Cox; F. Hubert Garner, T. Ervin Mansfield; Bertha L. Matthews;
J. Douglas Moretz; Nathan E. Paschal and Robert T. Reives. Board of Education
members present were Randy Mann; Jan Perkinson; David Simpson; Joan Wagoner;
Frances Warner; James Womack and Phil Yarborough.
Chairman Garner presided and County Attorney K. R. Hoyle delivered the
invocation.
Board of Education Vice Chairman David Simpson reviewed bids received on
February 4, 5, 6 and 7, 1997, for Phase I options of the Long Range Facilities Plan, a copy
of which is attached to these minutes and by this reference made a part hereof. Bids for
these projects were approved by the Board of Education at their February 10, 1997,
regular meeting.
Mr. Simpson also discussed with the Boards status of the Broadway School site.
He told the Boards that plans to forego renovations at this school and possibly build a new
school, site undetermined, were being discussed. The Board of Education has not decided
which way they planned to go on this matter.
The status of the gymnasium and auditorium at the Deep River School site, after
completion of the new school, were discussed. Concerns were expressed concerning the
demolition of the gymnasium and auditorium at this facility by some of the
Commissioners. Randy Mann told the Boards the old building would be removed because
of safety and aesthetic concerns.
The status of the Deep River School sewer system were discussed. Concerns
were expressed by the Commissioners as to the size of 2" pipe to be used in this three
mile project.
