Our own <br />Rules of Procedure state we "have only those powers conferred on us by law or <br />some special grant of power." <br />Finally, let me say my decision has absolutely nothing to do with the First <br />Amendment Rights, nor about the integrity of the pastor or any other Church <br />member, nor about an intent to defraud Lee County of taxes. <br />As a matter of record there are (A) 149 religious bodies in Lee County which <br />hold title to (B) 336 pieces of property. Taxes were paid on only 32 parcels last <br />year for a total of $10,631.55 with an average of $332.25 per parcel. <br />For these factual reasons, members of the Board, I urge you to vote no on <br />the motion to rescind." <br />Upon a vote, the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Matthews, Moretz, Paschal and Reives <br />Nay: Cox, Garner and Mansfield <br />The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted by a four to three vote. <br />The Board considered a corrective action concerning the tax appeal of Coty, <br />Inc. Tax Administrator Roger Kelley told the Board that at the November 17, 1997 <br />meeting the Board approved the tax appeal of Coty, Inc. The motion at that <br />meeting was for Coty to pay delinquent taxes and penalty on the taxes for the <br />prior years with a compromise settlement of $44,386.00. After the Tax <br />Department calculated the tax and penalties, using the methodology from Coty, <br />they discovered the correct amount of taxes due to the County is $43,380.14. <br />Commissioner Paschal moved to approve the corrective action for Coty, Inc. with <br />the correct amount of taxes due of $43,380.14. Commissioner Cox seconded the <br />motion, and upon a vote, the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Garner, Matthews, Paschal and Reives <br />Nay: Cox, Mansfield and Moretz <br />The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted by a four to three vote. <br />At this time Chairperson Matthews recognized various members of the Lee <br />County Health Department for their years of service to the agency.
