Commissioner Cox seconded the motion, and upon a vote, the results were as follows: Aye: Cox, Garner, Mansfield, Matthews, Moretz, Paschal and Reives Nay: None The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. Chairperson Matthews told the Board that in January, 1997, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Social Services issued the first Challenge For Children, asking every county Department of Social Services in North Carolina to make foster care backlog reduction a top priority for the child welfare system during 1997. She asked the Board to consider recognizing the Lee County Department of Social Services for accepting the Challenge For Children, 1997 and for its commitment to ensuring safe, permanent homes on a timely basis for abused and neglected children. Commissioner Moretz moved to send a letter of recognition to the local Social Services office. Commissioner Garner seconded the motion, and upon a vote, the results were as follows: Aye: Cox, Garner, Mansfield, Matthews, Moretz, Paschal and Reives Nay: None The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. Chairperson Matthews told the Board that both meetings in June would be held in the afternoon due to public hearings scheduled. Commissioner Garner moved to go into closed session to give direction to the County Manager concerning land acquisition and to hear a report from legal counsel concerning the case of Thompson vs. Lee County. Commissioner Moretz seconded the motion, and upon a vote, the results were as follows: Aye: Cox, Garner, Mansfield, Matthews, Moretz, Paschal and Reives Nay: None The Chairperson ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously and the Board was in closed session.
