Ms. Ebhardt asked the Committee to consider giving the Temple
Theater $18,000 this year instead of $12,000 that was proposed by the County Manager.
She told the Committee 50% of the patrons that visit the Theater are from Lee County,
with the remaining 50% coming from out-of-county. She told the Committee the out-of-
county patrons also shop in Sanford, eat at restaurants and go out for drinks after the
shows. Commissioner Garner spoke in favor of granting this request.
Mr. Cowan discussed with the Committee the current telephone system at the Lee
County Government Center. The system is ten years old and very limited as to its
capabilities and cannot be expanded. He has negotiated a proposed contract with Sprint
for $12,000 per year to rent a system to replace and update the current system. After
some discussion, Chairman Reives moved to add the Sprint telephone contract to the
current FY 1998-99 budget. Commissioner Moretz seconded the motion, and upon a
vote, the results were as follows:
Aye: Mansfield, Moretz and Reives
Nay: None
The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously.
The Committee considered a part-time position for the Register of Deeds Office.
County Manager William Cowan told the Committee this office was due to be fully
automated in the near future. Commissioner Moretz asked that money for this part-time
position be placed in reserve until the office is fully automated and at that time see if the
position will still be needed.
The Committee heard a report from Public Works Director Kenny Cole concerning
a policy he had recently written concerning procedures for the replacement of County
vehicles. Mr. Cole went over the procedures and answered questions from Committee
members. Chairman Reives stated too much money was being requested for new vehicles
to be driven around town. Emergency Management Director Warren Lee discussed with
the Committee the two different sources of revenue he receives for his department. He
stated the $15,000 in revenue he currently receives from the State may be eliminated next
year. He also told the Committee one of the reasons he was requesting a new vehicle was
because his current vehicle is not adequate to safely pull the Haz Mat trailer he is
responsible for during work hours, should there should be a hazardous materials incident
in the County. Chairman Reives stated the matter would be taken into consideration.
Chairman Reives asked for a breakdown on the schools budget. Mr. Cowan went over
this with the Committee.
Chairman Reives asked Mr. Cowan to find out what School Superintendent Steve
Wrenn's salary would be for the next six months while he is in the interim position. He
also wanted to know if the State or County pays Mr. Wrenn's supplement pay.
2
