Mr. Goodwin told the Board about a proposed loop hiking trail <br />of approximately four miles that the Park Association is currently working on. He <br />asked the Board to endorse a resolution of support for this project. Commissioner <br />Garner moved to support the following resolution: <br />DEEP RIVER PARK OF CHATHAM & LEE COUNTIES <br />THAT WHEREAS, the Deep River Park Association has created a regional <br />park bridging Chatham and Lee Counties between Gulf and Cumnock; and <br />WHEREAS, this site is the geographic center of North Carolina and the nexus <br />of the state's early industrial development; and <br />WHEREAS, it is in the region's best interest to promote its natural, historic, <br />and cultural resources for preservation, recreation, educational use, and economic <br />development proposes; and <br />WHEREAS, the Historic Camelback Bridge connecting Chatham and Lee <br />Counties has been preserved and is the site of the nationally recognized Deep River <br />Park, a water access and cultural events; and <br />WHEREAS, the Norfolk Southern Double Warren Truss Railroad Bridge <br />connecting Gulf and Cumnock over the Deep River may be available for trail <br />opportunities thus creating a circle trail with the Camelback Bridge and the Deep River <br />Park. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE TI' RESOLVED by the Lee County Board of <br />Commissioners that it supports the development of the Deep Trail and will partner with <br />other agencies, boards, councils, commissions, and citizens groups where appropriate to <br />accomplish the goal of a regional park, trail, and tourist destination.
