X12 <br />BNK 17 wE 849 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />LITTLER SWEEP <br />1999 <br />WHEREAS, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, local governments and concerned <br />community and civic organizations labor throughout the year to keep Lee County and <br />North Carolina roadsides beautiful and free of litter; and <br />WHEREAS, this fall the North Carolina Department of Transportation will <br />coordinate the work of such groups during a two-week cleanup effort to maximize <br />statewide benefit, increase awareness of the need for cleaner roadsides in North Carolina, <br />deter littering, and encourage recycling of solid wastes; and <br />WHEREAS, North Carolina's beautiful scenery and clean environment attract <br />tourists, aid in recruiting new industries, and are a source of pride for her citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, this fall cleanup will improve the quality of life for all Lee County <br />and North Carolina residents; and <br />WHEREAS, during the 1998 fall cleanup campaign, more than 2.3 million <br />pounds of litter were collected from North Carolina highways; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, WE THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF <br />COMMISSIONERS, do hereby proclaim September 17-30, 1999, as "Litter Sweep" in <br />Lee County and urge all citizens to acknowledge the fine work of beautification groups <br />and aid them in their valued efforts. <br />Adopted this the 7°i day of September, 1999. <br />Herbert A.
