014 <br />a00x 17 Pace 870 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />POW/MIA RECOGNITION WEEK <br />WHEREAS, throughout American history our prisoners of war and missing in <br />action have been called upon to make uncommon sacrifices; and <br />WHEREAS, in fulfilling their duty as citizens of the United States, they have <br />defended American ideals while suffering unimaginable indignities under the absolute <br />control of the enemy; and <br />WHEREAS, we as Americans believer that freedom is precious because it has <br />been won and preserved for all at a very great cost; and <br />WHEREAS, all Americans should recognize the special debt we owe to our <br />fellow citizens who, in the act of serving our Nation, relinquished their freedom so that <br />we might enjoy the blessings of peace and liberty; and <br />WHEREAS, few Americans can more fully appreciate the value of liberty and <br />self-govenunent than those Americans who were interned in enemy prison camps as <br />POWs and those who remain missing in action; and <br />WHEREAS, their dignity, faith, and valor reminds us of the allegiance we owe to <br />our nation and its defenders as well as the compassion we owe to those families of the <br />missing in action who daily demonstrate heroic courage and fortitude in the face of <br />uncertainty. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we the Lee County Board of Commissioners,-do hereby <br />proclaim September 19-25, 1999 as "POW/MIA RECOGNITION WEEK' in Lee <br />County, a week dedicated to all former American prisoners of war, to those still missing, <br />and to their families, and urge all residents of Lee County to join in honoring those <br />outstanding servicemen. <br />Dated this 20`h day of September, 1999. <br />Herbert A.
