a~oK f7 GCE 866
EXECUTIVE PROCLAMATION
By
THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
The entire month of October 1999 is devoted to Senior Vaccination Season (SVS).
This public health initiative has been established to ensure that adults age 65 and over
are immunized against flu and pneumonia at the proper time.
We all have a role to play in making certain that adults age 65 and over in our
community are properly immunized against flu and pneumonia. That is because we all
have a lot at stake in the fight to raise immunization rates for older adults. Proper
immunization lays a foundation for health during the flu season, keeping our older
citizens safe from these deadly diseases. Public health prevention measures like SVS
not only contribute to the health of our community, they are very cost effective and save
us money and scarce resources.
Preventable diseases such as flu and pneumonia have been occurring at high rates
in our state in recent years, threatening the health and lives of older adults. These
diseases can be prevented through appropriate immunizations. I believe it is time for
everyone in our community to take responsibility by spreading the word about SVS and
the need for adults age 65 and over to get their flu and pneumonia shots in October. I
officially challenge all citizens of Lee County to support SVS by ensuring that all seniors
age 65 and older receive their flu and pneumonia shots on time.
We hope to overcome the barriers that make immunizing older adults difficult. We
need to educate family members, caretakers and health care providers about the
importance of timely immunizations against the flu and pneumonia. We need to
increase access to immunization services and work for long-term policies that will
ensure annual, timely vaccinations against these unnecessary diseases.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim
October 1999 as:
SENIOR VACCINATION SEASON IN LEE COUNTY
We encourage businesses, government agencies, community-based organizations,
service groups and private citizens to spread the SVS message throughout our
community. I also encourage Lee County health care providers and families with older
adults to become partners in the health care of those ages 65 and over by ensuring
immunization against flu and pneumonia during SVS.
Adopted this 20th day of Sept. , 1999
Herb Hincks, Chairman
a n II Lee, ZCIer
010
