0 <br />a~, nt-q <br />Leo <br />lei <br />4e '~FEQ aouutij oarb of aummissiomrs <br />y"Solutiou <br />WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Sanford was organized on May 14, 1925 with 20 members; and, <br />WHEREAS, the first meetings of The Rotary Club of Sanford were held at the Methodist Church, dues were $25.00 <br />per year, initiation fee was $20.00, members were required to pay $ .75 for their lunch, and any member who was more <br />than five minutes late had to pay a fine of $ .25; and, <br />WHEREAS, during the Depression Years Rotary members helped those less fortunate by contributing to the milk fund <br />and buying eye glasses for those unable to pay for them, sending two patients to the Tuberculosis Sanitarium at <br />McCain, North Carolina, buying coal for a kindergarten, and making other charitable donations in the community; and, <br />WHEREAS, in 1953 a student loan fund program was established by the Club to assist needy students to start or <br />continue their education; and, <br />WHEREAS, in 1974 the Club provided 50% of the cost for the construction of six tennis courts at O. T. Sloan park; <br />and, <br />WHEREAS, the first annual Rotary Golf Tournament was held in September 1983 at the Sanford Golf Course; and, <br />WHEREAS, the first annual Sportsman's Show was held at the Lee Cowny Fairgrounds in August, 1984; and, <br />WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Sanford sponsored a new club for the Jonesboro area with the first meeting on <br />April 8, 1985; and, <br />WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Sanford has been responsible for many outstanding and worthwhile projects <br />throughout the years; and, <br />WHEREAS, The. Rotary Club of Sanford will celebrate its 75'" anniversary on Tuesday, May 16, 2000. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, We the Lee County Board of Commissioners would like to commend The Rotary Club of <br />Sanford for all of the many outstanding projects it has sponsored and assisted with over the years, and commend all <br />individuals that have been a part of the Club or continue to be a part of the Club. <br />Adopted this the 15" day of May 2000. <br />Herbert A.
