8"U <br />"K 18 Pat E cog fi ~ 3 <br />The Board considered a late list penalty appeal by Alltel Communications. Tax <br />Administrator Roger Kelley told the Board that Alltel had requested that a late list <br />penalty of $225.13 be forgiven. Mr. Kelley recommended to the Board that the request <br />be denied. After some discussion, Commissioner Paschal moved to accept the <br />recommendation of the Tax Administrator to deny Alltel's request. Upon a vote, the <br />results were as follows: <br />Aye: Adams, Gather, Hincks, Matthews, Paschal, Reives, and Sauls <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />Health Director Mike Hanes told the Board that the Governor's Task Force on <br />Health Objectives has certified Lee County as a Healthy Carolinians County in <br />recognition of Health Department's commitment to creating a healthy North Carolina <br />community. He also told the Board that the department received special recognition of <br />the Thad B. Wester Community Excellence Award for the Lee Community Action <br />Network, LeeCAN. He told the Board that this award is given to a newly Celli Fled county <br />in recognition of their outstanding achievement in promoting important health objectives <br />and increased awareness of disease prevention. <br />The Board considered a request from the Department of Social Services to hire an <br />additional employee with funds from the TANF Block Grant. Social Services Director <br />Brenda Potts asked the Board to approve the hiring of a new Social Worker III as part of <br />this grant. She told the Board that during the last legislative session, the General <br />Assembly recognized several counties that did not meet the recommended staffing <br />standard. Lee County was recognized as one of those counties. Mrs. Potts told the Board <br />that $53,500 has been approved by the General Assembly for a position. The beginning <br />salary for a Social Worker III in Lee County is $31,592. After some discussion, <br />Commissioner Matthews moved to approve the hiring of a Social Worker III using funds <br />from the TANT Block Grant. Upon a vote, the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Adams, Garner, Hincks, Matthews, Paschal,Reives, and Sauls <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />The Board considered bids for new lighting at Buchanan ball field. Parks and <br />Recreation Director John Payne told the Board that he had received the following bids: <br />Walter Holmes Electric $ 36,000 (Masco) <br />Dunn, NC <br />Tommy Lawrence Electrical S 39,900 (Musco) <br />Tommy Lawrence Electrical $ 35,785 (G.E.) <br />Roxboro, NC <br />3 <br />
