Chapter 4 <br />Lee County Code <br />Animals <br />Division 4 . Rabies Control. <br />Sec. 4-91. Compliance with state law required. <br />It shall be unlawful for any person to fail to comply with North Carolina <br />General Statutes Section 130A-184 thru 130A-201 relating to rabies control. <br />Secs. 4- 92 <br />thru 4-120. Reserved. <br />Division 5. Impoundment, Redemption and Adoption of Animals. <br />Sec. 4- 121. Impoundment. <br />Animals may be impounded as provided for in this Chapter. Impoundment of <br />an animal shall not prevent Animal Services from using any other remedy provided <br />by this Chapter. <br />Sec.4-122.Notice of impoundment. <br />Immediately upon impounding an animal, Animal Services shall make <br />reasonable effort to notify the owner of the impoundment and the conditions <br />under which the animal may be redeemed. If the owner is unknown or cannot be <br />located, notice of such impoundment shall be posted at the website <br />www.leecountync.gov in the Animal Services section. <br />Sec. 4-123. Redemption by owner of impounded animal. <br />The owner of an animal impounded under this Chapter may redeem the animal <br />and regain possession thereof within three (3) business days after notice of <br />impoundment is given or posted, as required by Section 4-122, by complying with <br />all applicable provisions of this Chapter and paying any required fees. <br />An animal shall be vaccinated by the animal shelter when reclaimed at the <br />owner's expense or written proof of rabies vaccination must be provided within <br />72 hours of reclamation. If owner decides to have the animal vaccinated at <br />their chosen veterinarian, written proof must be provided to animal services <br />within 72 hours of reclamation. <br />Sec. 4-124. Disposition of unredeemed animal. <br />(a) If an impounded animal is not redeemed by the owner within the <br />period prescribed in Section 4-123, it may be adopted or euthanized. <br />Animals that are not euthanized shall become the property of the county <br />and may be offered for adoption to any responsible adult who evidences a <br />willingness and ability to comply with this Chapter. <br />(b) All unaltered dogs and cats adopted from Animal Services shall be <br />altered. All animals adopted from Animal Services shall be micro - <br />chipped within 30 days of their adoption. All dogs and cats adopted from <br />Animal Services shall be vaccinated for rabies by 16 weeks of age. <br />Written proof the dog or cat has been altered and microchipped shall be <br />provided within 30 working days by the adopter to Animal Services. <br />Any animal adopted by the Animal Shelter shall receive a rabies vaccination <br />at the owner's expense unless the animal is less than 16 weeks of age.
