This public
health initiative has been established to ensure that adults age 65 and over are immunized against
the flu and pneumonia.
We all have a role to play in making certain that adults age 65 and over in our community are
properly immunized against the flu and pneumonia. That is because we all have a lot at stake in the
fight to raise immunization rates for older adults. Proper immunization lays a foundation for health
during the flu season, keeping our older citizens safe from these deadly diseases. Public health
prevention measures like SVS not only contribute to the health of our community, they are very cost
effective and save money and scarce resources.
Preventable diseases such as the flu and pneumonia have been occurring at high rates in our state
in recent years, threatening the health and lives of older adults. These diseases can be prevented
through appropriate immunizations. We believe it is time for everyone in our community to take
responsibility by spreading the word about SVS and the need for adults age 65 and over to get their
flu and pneumonia shots. We officially challenge all members of Lee County to support SVS by
ensuring that all seniors age 65 and older receive their flu and pneumonia shots.
We hope to overcome the barriers that make immunizing older adults difficult. We need to
educate family members, caretakers and health care providers about the importance of
immunizations against the flu and pneumonia. We need to increase access to immunization services
and work for long-term policies that will ensure vaccinations against these unnecessary diseases.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Health and the Lee County Board of
Commissioners do hereby proclaim October 2001 through January 2002 as:
SENIOR VACCINATION SEASON IN LEECOUNTY
We encourage businesses, government agencies, community-based organizations, service groups
and private citizens to spread the SVS message throughout our community. We also encourage Lee
County health care providers and families with older adults to become partners in the health care of
those ages 65 and over by ensuring immunization against the flu and pneumonia during SVS.
Adopted this (:9, day of 0(j h y-
a el Lee, Clerk
Joudd, Chai
L e County Bo rd of eat
Herb Hincks, Chairman
Lee County Board of Commissioners
