BUN -L F~GE $i.6 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />FAMILY DAY <br />2003 <br />WHEREAS, "Family-Dap-A Day to Eat Dinner PVith Your Children" is a <br />national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce <br />substance abuse by children and teens and raise healthier children; and <br />WHEREAS, Family Day emphasizes the importance of regular family activities <br />in parent-child communication and encourages Americans to make family dinners a <br />regular feature of their lives; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2001, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse <br />(CASA) launched Fcnnily Day as an annual event, which takes place on the fourth <br />Monday of each September (9/22/03); and <br />WHEREAS, since 1996, research has consistently shown that the more often a <br />child cats dinner with his family, the less likely that child is to smoke, drink or use illegal <br />drugs; and <br />WHEREAS, research also shows that teens who eat frequent family dinners are <br />less likely than other teens to have sex at young ages, get into fights or be suspended <br />from school, and arc at lower risk for thoughts of suicide; and <br />WHEREAS, frequent family dining is also connected to children doing well in <br />school and developing healthy eating habits. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, We the Lee County Board of Commissioners do <br />proclaim September 22, 2003, as Family Day in Lee County and encourage all families to <br />eat dinner with their children. <br />Adopted this the 2°d day of September 2003. <br />J <br />Herbert A.
