Fertilizing increases a plant's need for water.
• Postpone planting until fall or spring when there is generally less need for water.
• Install trickle-drip irrigation systems close to the roots of your plants. By dripping
water slowly, the system does not spray water into the air. Use soil probes for large
trees.
• Use water from rain barrels or leftover household water to irrigate trees and shrubs.
Additional Measures for Voluntary Conservation Phase;
• Do not allow children to play with water hoses or sprinklers.
• Limit washing of personal vehicles by individual residents.
• Be ready to catch rainfall that occurs. Rain barrels can be used. Place containers
tinder drain spouts.
• Collect leftover household water as available.
• Limit the washing down of houses, sidewalks, driveways, patios, etc. by individual
residents.
• Determine the amount of water being used outdoors by comparing water bills for
summer and winter.
• Limit the filling or refilling of any ornamental fountain pool or pond or other
stricture making similar use of water. The filling or refilling of swimming pools is
discouraged.
Conservation for Mandatory Restriction Phase
(In addition to measures listed above)
• Vegetable gardens and food trees should be given minimal amounts of water on an
individual basis only, and in accordance with the Water Shortage Response
Ordinance.
• Do not water lawns and inedible plants.
• Do not use sprinklers.
7/15/03 Page 4 of 5
