Washing dishes by hand, without the tap
running, saves approximately 25 gallons of water.
• Don't use the garbage disposal. Place food scraps in the trash.
• Adjust the water level on clothes washing machines, if possible. If not, wash full
loads only.
• Use non-phosphate detergent and save laundry water for lawns and plants.
• Turn off faucets while brushing teeth, etc. This saves about 5 gallons of water per
day.
• Reduce water used per [lush by installing ultra low-flow toilets. You may be eligible
to receive a financial incentive. Contact the City of Sanford Water Billing
Department.
• Reduce the number of toilet flushes per day. Each flush uses about 5 gallons (2-3 if
you have an ultra low flow toilet)
• Do not use the toilet as a trashcan.
• Use sink and tub stoppers to avoid wasting water.
• Take shorter showers and shallow baths. This saves about 25 gallons of water.
• Keep chilled water in the refrigerator for drinking-
Locale and repair leaks in faucets and water-using appliances. Faucets can usually be
fixed cheaply and quickly by replacing washers.
• Learn to read your Nvater meter so you can judge how much water you use and to see
what a difference conservation makes.
7/15/03 Page 1 of 5
