He told the board that the appeals process would be completed by
the end of March.
County Attorney K. R. Hoyle updated the board on the disposal of the old DMV
building located on Old Carbonton Road. He told the board that the deed description
from the State and the Lee County tax map do not agree. He further stated that the
property will have to be surveyed and a new map produced before the State can supply a
new deed and the building can be sold. Commissioner Reives moved to approve
5600.00 to have the property surveyed. Upon a vote, the results were as follows:
Aye: Adams, Hincks, Lemmond, Matthews, Reives, and Stevens
Nay: None
Absent: Paschal
The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously.
Commissioner Lemmond introduced Dr. Steven Gill as the new Director of the
Lee County Partnership for Children.
The board considered a proposal to provide rescue services for Lee County.
Commissioner Adams updated the board on what has taken place since this matter was
brought to the board's attention in October 2002. Mr. Adams discussed two proposals,
one from the Sanford and Lee County Fire Departments and one from the Sanford-Lee
County Rescue Squad. Equipment for
heavy rescue will be housed in a trailer in a central location and will be available for use
by any department. Extra calls would not be generated because the fire departments are
already responding to accidents reported to have injuries. A "STAR" team concept from
within the fire departments will be created, trained and certified to respond to various
technical rescues such as confined space, trench, high/low angle, swift water/dive and
heavy extrication. Commissioner Lemmond stated that he wished to commend the local
fire departments for their effort and time spent in providing fire protection for the county.
He also stated that the Rescue Squad has done an extremely outstanding job over the last
forty plus years and they have tried to keep "afloat", not with tax money but with
contributions and donations from fundraisers. He stated that lie felt that if they were
given the chance to receive even a small portion of what the fire departments receive they
could be as well equipped as the fire departments. He stated that lie was not against
funding the fire departments but also in favor of funding the Rescue Squad to keep this
valuable resource in the county. He feels that if it not funded the county will lose a great
3
