o r a <br />UJOA I- <br />HEALTHY NORTH CAROLINA MONTH <br />SEPTEMBER 2004 <br />BY THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH AND <br />LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSOMERS <br />A PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, good health for North Carolinians is necessary for the full enjoyment of life, for <br />success in school, and for a more productive workforce; and - <br />WHEREAS, preventable and controllable diseases, including asthma, diabetes, cancer and heart <br />disease, cost the State, local government and private employers billions of dollars every year; and <br />WHEREAS, diabetes increased among North Carolinians by 75% between 1995 and 2002, and <br />diabetes-related hospitalization costs totaled $2.4 billion in 2002 alone; and <br />WHEREAS, one in four North Carolinians has heart disease, and 40% of all deaths in the State are <br />caused by heart disease. In 1997, heart disease cost $1 78 billion in medical expenses, and <br />WHEREAS, nearly one in four deaths in North Carolina is caused by cancer. In 2000, $1 billion was <br />spent on medical costs for cancer. Breast, prostate, colorectal, skin and oral cancers that are detected through <br />screening can often be successfully treated; and <br />WHEREAS, one in ten of North Carolina's children has astluna and those children miss hvice as many <br />days of school as their counterparts. Asthma is the number one cause of emergency room visits and hospital <br />admissions for patients under the age of 21. Asttvna-related hospitalization costs totaled $100 million in 1997 <br />alone, and <br />WHEREAS, North Carolinians can take advantage of many activities that will improve their <br />health and help prevent and control disease, with small changes in diet and activirY having a dramatic <br />impact on health in the long term; and <br />WHEREAS, studies have shown that health promotion and disease management programs in <br />major private sector companies have saved, on average, $3.00 for every $1.00 imvestcd; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, L JOHN Sl-IONI Z, Chairperson of the Lee Count}- Board of Health, and <br />I-IBRBERT HINCKS, Chairperson of the Lee County Board of Corrunissioners do hereby proclaim September <br />2004, as "HEALTHY NORTH CAROLINA MONTH." I urge all North Carolinians to participate in <br />wellness activities, utilize workplace wellness programs, utilize wellness benefits available through their health <br />insurance programs, and participate in disease detection screening programs. <br />Dr. John Shontz <br />Mr. Herbert Hincks <br />
