KwX 19 FXG", 888 <br />MINUTES FROM THE SPECIAL BUDGET WORK SESSION <br />OF THE <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />FOR THE <br />COUNTY OF LEE, STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA <br />MAY 24.2004 <br />The Board of Commissioners for the County of Lee. State of North Carolina, held <br />a special Budget Work Session at 1:30 p.m. in the Gordon Wicker Community <br />Conference Room, 106 Hillcrest Drive, Sanford, North Carolina, on said date. <br />Commissioners present were W. Chad Adams, Herbert A. Hincks,'Jerry M. Lemmond, <br />Bertha L. Matthews, Nathan E. Paschal, Robert T. Reives, and Amy L. Stevens. <br />Chairman Hineks called the meeting to order and the following business was <br />transacted. <br />Tax Administrator Kep Kepley discussed with the Board collection rates and the <br />member of individuals that currently owe over $1,500 in back-due taxes. He discussed <br />with the Board a need for his department to be able to garnish bank accounts in order to <br />collect these taxes. No action was taken on the matter. <br />The Board discussed proposed tax rates for all rural volunteer fire departments. <br />After some discussion, the Board agreed that representatives from the Cape Fear Fire <br />Department, Carolina Trace Fire Department, and Northview Fire Department attend the <br />Commissioner's meeting on June 7, 2004, to discuss their FY 2004-05 budget requests. <br />Emergency Management Director Jim Groves discussed with the Board a <br />proposed new Emergency Management Office that will be constructed as an addition to <br />the new Emergency Training Center at the old Lee County Airport site. Consensus of the <br />Board was to give the community college approval to proceed with the project and ratify <br />the action at the next meeting on June 7, 2004. <br />The Board discussed in much detail budget requests from the Board of Education <br />and Central Carolina Community College for FY 2004-05. No action was taken on either <br />budget. <br />The Board discussed various department budget requests and the possible need to <br />increase the tax rate by three cents (3¢.) <br />After some discussion, County Manager William Cowan was instructed to cut and <br />prioritize $250,000 from his proposed budget and report to the Board at the June 7, 2004, <br />meeting. <br />
