Do 23 640
Economic Development Director Bob Heuts stated that a strategic planning meeting
was scheduled for September 15, 2010 at which time the EDC Board will begin work on a
strategic plan to be presented to all boards by January 1, 2011.
Mr. Heuts discussed Lee County statistics, unemployment statistics and recent projects
completed such as Axxor, Frontier Spinning, Parkdale, and Challenge Printing. Work is still in
process with a Dutch printing company on a possible relocation to the area that would employ
up to 35 new employees. Mr. Heuts stated that he had received thirty-eight visits for new
projects since January 2010. Monthly meetings are also held with BRAC representatives and
RTP to market Lee County. There are approximately 6,000-8,000 hits per month on the EDC
website.
The Caterpillar project was discussed which will bring approximately 325 new jobs to
Lee County and additional training requirements for Central Carolina Community College.
CCCC has obtained a $447,000 grant from Golden Leaf to build a facility to train Caterpillar
employees. A $500,000 grant has also been received to assist with paving the road at the
Industrial Park from the Caterpillar facility to Colon Road. Grants are also being pursued for
water and sewer projects. The County is working with Rural Development on other low
interest loans.
The second annual Family Day at the airport will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is seen as another way to market Lee County.
A question and answer time was allowed for board members to ask questions and
present suggestions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, members from the funding boards were asked to write
ideas on sticky-notes for the September 15th strategic planning meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
17,` ' ~k .
Richard B.
