The Chairman of the Board then presented certain materials received <br /> from the Division Engineer's Office of the State Highway Commission concerning <br /> proposed improvements and paving of roads in Lee County during the fiscal <br /> year 1957-58 and the fiscal year 1958-59. After full discussion of the entire <br /> road program, Commissioner Winstead moved that the Board approve the <br /> proposed "Secondary Road Plan for 1957-58 for improving Roads in Lee County" <br /> and the "Proposed Secondary Road Plan for Lee County for 1958-59", which <br /> plans were submitted by the Division Engineer of the State Highway Commission. <br /> Commissioner Atkins seconded the motion and the same was unanimously <br /> adopted. <br /> Mrs. Laura B. Rosser, Acting Supt. of Public Welfare, presented a report <br /> fi the activities and operations of the Welfare Department for the preceeding <br /> month. <br /> J. J. Lentz, Supt of Lee County Schcds, and J. CA, Cameron, J. H. <br /> Wicker and J. G. Edwards, members of the Lee County Board of Education, <br /> came before the Board to request that funds be appropriated for classroom <br /> additions at the W B. Wicker School and for the construction of a Lee County <br /> Board of Education Office Building-at a total cost of'$114, 640. 25. . Mr. Lentz <br /> pointed out that the Lee County Board of Education had previously been <br /> instructed by the Board of Commissioners to advertise for bids on these two • <br /> projects and that bids had been received, the bid on the classrooms at the <br /> W. B. Wicker School being in the amount of $87, 741. 50 and bids on the <br /> office building be-ingf in the amount of $26, 898. 75. It was pointed out by E. M. <br /> Underwood, Jr. , auditor, that the County could issue bonds without a vote <br /> of the people, in the amount of $67, 000. 00 and that the balance of the funds <br /> necessary to contract for this construction would have to be raised from funds <br /> realized from tax levies. The entire school construction program was <br /> discussed at length and in detail. Thereafter, Commissioner Cheshire moved <br /> that the County Attorney be instructed to draw proper resolution so that bonds <br /> in the amount of $67, 000 could be issued without a vote of the people, and <br /> that necessary resolution be drawn to provide for the appropriation of the funds <br /> necessary for the completion of both the W. B. Wicker School Classroom <br /> project and the Lee County Board of Education Office Building. This motion <br /> was seconded by Commissioner Winstead and the same was adopted by the <br />
