Mrs.. Laura.D. Rosser, Supt. of Public Welfare, presented the monthly • report of the Welfare Department. L. L. Beckham, Director of Civil Defense, presented his monthly report. Commissioner Measamer moved that the Board of Commissioners authorize a special election to be held at the time of the general election on November 8, 1960, to submit to the•electors of Lee County the question whether said County shall be. divided into•five districts for the purpose • of nominating members of the Board of Commissioners of-aid County, as authorized and empowered by the Provisions of Chapter 563 of the 1959 Session Laws of North Carolina;. This motion died for lack of a second. • • • Commissioner Measamer moved the adoption of the following re solution: RESOLUTION URGING THE INTERSTATE COMMERCE COMMISSION TO APPROVE THE APPLICATION OF SEABOARD AIR • • LINE RAILROAD AND •ATLANTIC COAST- LINE RAILROAD FOR AUTHORITY TO • MERGE THEIR PROPERTIES INTO ONE • • RAIL SYSTEM ' WHEREAS, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company and the Atlantic • Coast Line Railroad Company, both of whose lines serve the City of Sanford and the County of Lee, State of North Carolina, have proposed a merger of their properties into one rail system, and have applied or will shortly , apply, to the Interstate Commerce Commission for'the approval of such merger; and • WHEREAS, it is the unanimous opinion of the•members of the Board of Commissioners of Lee County that the•proposed merger will result in a, stronger transportation• system and•will„redound .to the benefit of said Lee • County and the citizens.of Sanford in providing its citizens with a progressive and modern transportation service, designed to meet the needs of the shipping and traveling public; • • NOW; THEREFORE, BE.IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF LEE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA: • That, upon filing q.with the Interstate. Commerce Commission by Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company and Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of an application for authority to merge their respective • properties into one rail system, the Interstate Commerce Commission be, and`it is heieby, respectfully urged to expedite the hearing of, and to grant such application. • The motion for the adoption of said resolution wa•s seconded by Commissioner Winstead and the same was adopted by the unanimous vote • of the Board. • • There being no further business to come before the Board.the meeting was adjourned. • • Chairman Attested: - • • • • Clerk
