COCK 6 PAGE 361 Miss Mary Scott Gurley appeared before the Board and gave a report on the activities of the County Library. Mr. Nathan Crissman, Tax Collector, appeared before the Board and reported that his collections in June totaled $34,097.76 and that 90.5% of the levy had been collected. Upon motion of Commissioner Kelly, seconded by Commissioner Yow and unanimously adopted, the Board resolved to authorized the Tax Collector to purchase a calculating machine for his office. Mrs. Louise Dowdy, appeared before the Board and gave a report on the activities of the Health Department. She also presented the written report of Mr. Hugh Talley, the County Sanitarian. Mr. L. L. Beckham, Director, appeared before the Board and gave a report on the activities of the Sanford-Lee County Civil Defense Department. Mr. J. C. Eakes, Register of Deeds, appeared before the Board and gave a report on the activities of his office. Mr. William Gregson, Service Officer, appeared before the Board and gave the quarterly report on the activities of the Board of Veterans. Mr. W. A. Martin, Chairman of the Economic Opportunity Comm- ittee appeared before the Board and gave a report on the activities of his committee. Mr. W. A. Martin, Director of the Lee County Industrial Education Center appeared before the Board and requested that $4,500 of the capital outlay fund in the current appropriation be advanced at this time to allow the Board of Trustees to complete the renovation of the county home building. The written report of Sheriff D. F. Holder was presented to the Board. There was a discussion about mileage allowances but no formal action was taken. (G.S. 147-8) Commissioner McLeod reported that several reports were due from the West Sanford Rural Fire Department and the Cape Fear Rural Fire Department and the assistance checks were being withheld pending compliance by the departments. Upon motion of Commissioner McLeod, seconded by Commissioner Yow, the Board unanimously resolved to purchase a ventilating fan to be installed in the jail. Mr. E. M. Underwood, Jr. , reported that he had received an insurance policy for Workmen's Compensation coverage. Upon motion of Commissioner Yow, seconded by Commissioner McLeod, the Board resolved to return the policy pending receipt of the advisory insurance committee's report. The Chairman stated that under General Statute 105-283 the current term of the Tax Supervisor expired on the first Monday in July and that the Board should appoint a Tax Supervisor to serve for the,next two years: ' Upori motion of Commissioner Ledwell, seconded by Commissioner McLeod, the Board resolved PAGE FIVE
