White seconded the motion and <br />upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Chairman Dotterer called the Board's attention to the <br />request of the Richmond-Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad to <br />eliminate trains nos. 30 and 34 between Richmond, Virginia, and <br />Washington, D. C. The Board resolved tooppose the elimination <br />of said trains since it would effect passenger travel from Sanford, <br />and authorized the Clerk to notify the Attorney General of North <br />Carolina of the Board's position. <br />The Board generally discussed the ambulance operation <br />and the Chairman requested Commissioner A. E. White, Gordon A. <br />wicker and William B. Joyce to survey the entire operation and to <br />report back their recommendations to the Board. <br />The Commission noted that Mr. William B. Aycock, a <br />teacher at Deep River School had presented to the Deep River School <br />Library, a copy of Bancroft's History of the Constitution ofthe <br />United States, which book formerly belonged to his grandfather, <br />the late Governor Charles B. Aycock, and which book was dedicated <br />to the Lee County Commissioners for their efforts to continue to <br />advance education in North Carolina. The Clerk was instructed to <br />advise Mr. Aycock of their appreciation for the gift, and his senti- <br />ments. <br />The Commission noted that Mr. J. Atwood Whitman, <br />Forester of Carthage, North Carolina, had presented to the County <br />a mosaic aerial photograph map of the County, to hang in the <br />Register of Deeds office. The Clerk was instructed to inform <br />Mr. Whitman of their appreciation for the gift. <br />The Board next considered a bill received from <br />Kammer's, Inc., for uniforms for the Sheriff's Department, in <br />the amount of $1,174.70. The Sheriff's budget contained only a <br />balance of $72.00 for this item and no purchase order had been <br />obtained. Upon motion made, seconded and duly adopted, it was <br />resolved to transfer the amount of $400.00 from the line item for <br />auxiliary deputies and $702.70 from the line item for personal <br />services to the line item for uniforms, all within the fund for the <br />operation of the Sheriff's Department, for the purpose of paying <br />the statement obtained from Kammer's, Inc. The Clerk was instruct- <br />ed to advise the Sheriff of the action taken and to admonish him to <br />conform to the purchase order procedure established to insure proper <br />fiscal control. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner A. E. White, seconded <br />by Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker, and unanimously adopted, it <br />was resolved to authorize the Tax Supervisor to examine the business <br />property statements of business firms within the County, filed <br />with the North Carolina Department of Revenue, and to authorize <br />the Chairman to execute a letter to such effect. <br />The written report of Nathan Crissman, as Tax <br />Collector, was presented to the Board. <br />The written report of, Thomas Haislip, Chairman of <br />the Agricultural Extension Service, was presented to the Board. <br />The written report of Mr. John F. Wood, Building and <br />Electrical Inspector, was presented to the Board. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Joyce, seconded and <br />unanimously adopted, it was resolved to amend charges for electrical <br />inspections where there are multiple installations at one site <br />to charge the flat rate for the first installation and $1.00 for each <br />additional installation. <br />Page Five <br />
