BOOK 7 PAGE394 Mr. Scott Swindell, Director of the Sanford Chamber of Commerce, appeared before the Board and requested financial assistance in installing a water line at the Castleberry Warehouse on the Jonesboro- Lemon Springs Highway to assist in attracting industry. No formal action was taken at this time. Mr. Steve Gunter, President of the Sanford Junior Chamber of Commerce, appeared before the Board and requested permission to erect a freedom wall on the Courthouse lawn. This wall would have bronze plaques with the names of deceased veterans from Lee County and would be landscaped. Upon motion of Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker, seconded by Commissioner Perry White, permission was granted for the erection of the memorial on the Courthouse lawn. Chairman Dotterer read a letter received from Governor Robert W. Scott, concerning the food assistance program. The written report of the Chairman of the Agricultural Extension Service, on the activities of his agency was presented to the Board. The written report of the Sheriff on the activities of his department for the preceding month was presented to the Board. The Chairman reported that the State Alcoholic Beverage Control authorities had advised the County that the Short Shop.on Woodland Avenue and Norman Abrams on Garden Street, had applied for beer permit. The written report of Nathan Crissman, County Tax Collector, was presented to the Board. The Chairman reported that the Civil Defense Department had received awards of special merit for its contributions in Community Shelter Plan, Shelter Management Training and in the Shelter Stocking Program. The written report of the County Electrical Inspector was presented to the Board and reviewed. The Board directed that the Electrical Inspector issue his permits for cash only and not extend credit to other than a County Agency or unit. Chairman Dotterer announced that the recommendations of the County Planning Department about housing regulations had been received and would be considered at a later meeting. Chairman Dotterer reported to the Board on meeting with the representatives of the Department of Local Affairs. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker reported on his meeting with the Division of Law and Order of the Department of Local Affairs and advised the Board that Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker is the voting member from Lee County and Alderman B. E. Kelly is the alternate member. Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker was authorized to prepare a list of names to constitute an advisory committee to assist these men. Dr. Charles Edrington has indicated that he would have to resign from the Comprehensive Planning Council and Commissioner Perry White was authorized to find a member of the Deikal Society who would be willing to serve in this capacity.
