800K 7 PA09 Chairman reported that the monthly report of the Veteran's Service Officer had been received and it was presented to the Board and ordered filed. The written report of D. F. Holder, Sheriff, of Lee County, on the activities of his Department for the preceding month, was presented to the Board. A representative of the division of Community Planning of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, presented a copy of the Housing Element of the Comprehensive Planning Program for Lee County, for its endorsement by the Board. After discussion, upon motion of Comm- issioner A. E. White, seconded by Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker, it was RESOLVED to defer consideration of this matter until the next meeting of the Board on Monday, January 19, 1970. Miss Peggy Hussey, Social Worker in charge of the Department of Social Services, appeared before the Board and explained the financial cuts made in the aid to families with dependent children and advised the Board it would require the approximate sum of $820. 91, to maintain the present level of AFDC Grants. Commissioner A. E. White moved that the sum of $1, 000. 00, be approp- riated from the unappropriated surplus in the General Fund to the Department of Social Services budget for the purpose of maintaining AFDC Grants at their present level. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a roll call vote, it was unanimously adopted as follows: AYE: A. E. White, Perry White, Franklin D. Wicker, Gordon A. Wicker and Dr. John E. Dotterer NO: None Miss Hussey submitted several names of persons in the Deep River Community who were willing to serve on the Department of Social Services County Board. After consideration, Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker moved that Mr. C. S. Ragan be appointed to the County Board Social Services to fill the unexpired term of Mr. Garland W. Beale, Jr., who resigned. Commissioner Perry White seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. Mr. Nathan Crissman, County Tax Collector, appeared before the Board and reported on his collections for the previous month. Mr. Hugh Brewer appeared before the Board and submitted figures for the renovation of the old Ball Room to a Commissioners' meeting room. The written report of the Chairman of the Agricultural Extension Service was presented to the Board. Upon motion of Commissioner Perry White, seconded by Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker, it was RESOLVED to employ the firm of John C. Muse and Company to audit the County accounts. Mr. W. M. Arnold, Jr., appeared before the Board and presented Mr. Lewis Clark, Landscape Architect and Mr. Charles Jones, Vice-President of the Engineering Firm of W. F. Freeman & Associates, to the Board. Mr. Clark gave a presentation of the proposed development of the property known as ''Carolina Trace''.. Mr. Jones told of the engineering work required to develop
