800K 7 PA09 <br />Chairman reported that the monthly report of the Veteran's Service <br />Officer had been received and it was presented to the Board and ordered filed. <br />The written report of D. F. Holder, Sheriff, of Lee County, on the <br />activities of his Department for the preceding month, was presented to the <br />Board. <br />A representative of the division of Community Planning of the North <br />Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, presented a copy of <br />the Housing Element of the Comprehensive Planning Program for Lee County, <br />for its endorsement by the Board. After discussion, upon motion of Comm- <br />issioner A. E. White, seconded by Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker, it was <br />RESOLVED to defer consideration of this matter until the next meeting of the <br />Board on Monday, January 19, 1970. <br />Miss Peggy Hussey, Social Worker in charge of the Department of Social <br />Services, appeared before the Board and explained the financial cuts made in <br />the aid to families with dependent children and advised the Board it would <br />require the approximate sum of $820. 91, to maintain the present level of AFDC <br />Grants. <br />Commissioner A. E. White moved that the sum of $1, 000. 00, be approp- <br />riated from the unappropriated surplus in the General Fund to the Department <br />of Social Services budget for the purpose of maintaining AFDC Grants at their <br />present level. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon <br />a roll call vote, it was unanimously adopted as follows: <br />AYE: A. E. White, Perry White, Franklin D. Wicker, Gordon A. Wicker <br />and Dr. John E. Dotterer <br />NO: None <br />Miss Hussey submitted several names of persons in the Deep River <br />Community who were willing to serve on the Department of Social Services <br />County Board. <br />After consideration, Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker moved that <br />Mr. C. S. Ragan be appointed to the County Board Social Services to fill the <br />unexpired term of Mr. Garland W. Beale, Jr., who resigned. <br />Commissioner Perry White seconded the motion and upon a vote it was <br />unanimously adopted. <br />Mr. Nathan Crissman, County Tax Collector, appeared before the Board <br />and reported on his collections for the previous month. <br />Mr. Hugh Brewer appeared before the Board and submitted figures for the <br />renovation of the old Ball Room to a Commissioners' meeting room. <br />The written report of the Chairman of the Agricultural Extension Service <br />was presented to the Board. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Perry White, seconded by Commissioner <br />Gordon A. Wicker, it was RESOLVED to employ the firm of John C. Muse and <br />Company to audit the County accounts. <br />Mr. W. M. Arnold, Jr., appeared before the Board and presented Mr. <br />Lewis Clark, Landscape Architect and Mr. Charles Jones, Vice-President of <br />the Engineering Firm of W. F. Freeman & Associates, to the Board. Mr. <br />Clark gave a presentation of the proposed development of the property known as <br />''Carolina Trace''.. Mr. Jones told of the engineering work required to develop <br />
