a
BOOK 7 PACE 516
unanimously adopted. Those voting for the motion were Messrs. Cooper, Rogers,
White, G. Wicker and F. Wicker. No one voted against it.
Chairman reported that a letter had been received from the family
of Mrs. Pearl B. Underwood, acknowledging the Board's expression of sympathy
at her passing.
The Chairman reported that an agenda had been received for a special
joint meeting of the Lee County Commissioners with the Sanford Board of
Aldermen, to discuss recreation matters, and that the meeting would be held
Wednesday, March 3rd, 1971, at 7:30 o'clock p. m., in the Council Chambers,
City Hall, Sanford, North Carolina.
The written request of Mr. Jack W. Atkins for a refund of $8.43
was presented to the Board. It appears that the taxes were paid on behalf
of Mr. Atkins by the First Federal Savings & Loan Association and that
Mr. Atkins had listed and paid the taxes on this house trailer in Moore County.
The Tax Supervisor recommended the refund.
Commissioner Perry White moved the adoption of the following
Resolution:
WHEREAS, Jack W. Atkins has made written request for refund
of taxes paid to Lee County; and WHEREAS, the Tax Supervisor has ascer-
tained and determined that said property was actually in Moore County and
that Mr. Atkins has listed and paid taxes to Moore County on the said property;
and WHEREAS, the said taxes were improperly collected by Lee County and
should be refunded as by law provided;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Tax Collector is
authorized and directed to pay and refund to Jack W. Atkins the sum of $8.43.
Commissioner Rogers seconded the motion and upon a vote it was
unanimously adopted. Those voting for the resolution were Messrs. Cooper,
Rogers, White, G. Wicker and F. Wicker. No one voted against it.
The Chairman reported that he would appear at a meeting of the League
of Women Voters concerning merger of City and County Government and invited
any other member of the Board to attend if he so desired.
Upon motion made, seconded and duly adopted, it was RESOLVED that
the Board would meet as a Board of Equalization and Review beginning at 11:00
o'clock a. m. on April 19, and would adjourn its meeting of such Board on the
same date and that the Tax Supervisor be directed to see that proper advertising
of such meeting be made.
The Board authorized the Chairman to direct letters to the Boards of
Commissioners for Guilford and Wake Counties commending them on their
Centennial Celebrations.
The Board again discussed the request of the City Board of Education
for funds and conferred at length with the County Auditor on the availability
of funds. Commissioner William H. Cooper moved the adoption of the following
resolution:
BE IT RESOLVED that the sum of $15,166.00 be appropriated from
monies in the General Fund derived from back taxes collections for school
purposes in excess of the anticipated back tax collections for that purpose to
the School Current Expense Fund and to be distributed $10,800 to the Sanford
City Board of Education and $4, 366. 00 to the Lee County Board of Education.
6.
